Almaden Country School is incredible. We've been at the school for three years, with two children enrolled. Here is a letter I wrote to the ACS Head of School last week:
I wanted to share with you how ACS has been impacting my life in the past 24-48 hours in a positive way.
I know it's a testament to the culture and leadership of ACS thanks to you, your staff and students.
1- My son attended pre-school with a different organization last year. Each morning he would ask if he had school. If he heard "yes" he would moan woefully and drag himself out of bed. This same kid now pops out of bed in the morning, well into the school year, and is consistently VERY excited to be going to class. That includes today after a not so good nights sleep. Thanks goes to his fabulous teachers.
2-My daughter has a love of learning that is so incredibly joyful to watch. She LOVES to read and grabs books off of shelves whenever she can. She enjoys math and talks highly of the fun she has in class solving problems. Tonight, at Whole Foods, we had dinner before heading to her Starmites recital. She ate her dinner quickly just so she could read me a book. As she read it, she was laughing at the story and picking up the humor and nuance of the characters and situations. She would rather read than eat! Her love of learning is the product of the ACS teachers who have touched her life these past three years.
3- Tonight, just before the Starmites concert, I came upon the drama director. She had just taken an unfortunate tumble in the parking lot. She was banged up but with the help of your admissions officer, who was working late in the office, she was taken care of. The other drama teacher let the Starmites know what had happened and called upon them to lead themselves in the hand movements for the concert (since their director was unable to do so). The students were concerned for their injured teacher and yet took on their new responsibility very well. They wanted to make her proud.
4- As the Starmites entered the auditorium they were thrilled to see their director, sitting in her chair, ready to lead them. I know 20 year olds who would've gone home after half the tumble she endured. The show went on, without a hitch, and the students are parents were thrilled.
There are jobs, professions and callings.
When I see how excited my kids are to attend ACS, when I interact with parents and students who are thrilled to be with ACS and then get to see, first hand, the dedication of your staff... I know that my kids, and all the students of ACS, are lucky enough to be surrounded by people answering their calling. That is awesome and inspiring.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Beach

Our sons have been attending ACS since preschool and we are extremely pleased with the developmental approach to learning that is core to the school’s philosophy. The learning environment is safe, which encourages children to challenge themselves without the risk of being judged. We have witnessed our boys’ self-confidence emerge and blossom as a result. The school’s enrichment programs--which include drama--along with the small class sizes are part of what make this school so special. Although the school is non-sectarian, our family also enjoys a great sense of community that comes from the high level of participation of so many like-minded parents. We plan on keeping our sons in ACS through 8th grade. The school is simply a wonderful foundation for future success no matter how you measure it: academically or socially.

We have been extremely pleased with the educational experience our children have received at Almaden Country School. My daughter started in the 4-year olds program seven years ago. She'll be entering 8th grade in the fall. We also have a son entering 6th grade. Both kids have enjoyed learning and going to school. They have not only grown academically but also as people, since the curriculum is rounded out with various enrichment classes like drama, music, art and such. We like that the environment is nurturing and a little less "worldly" than at some schools, in that the children are able to hang onto their childhood a bit longer. ACS is well-worth the tuition.

We have a son entering third grade and a daughter leaving the pre-K program and entering Kindergarten at ACS. We see in our kids the things we noticed in the children we observed when we were touring ACS four years ago: joyful spirit, self-confidence, and a love for learning. The families are a lot of fun to be around (which makes volunteering a blast, even for the Dads!) and our entire family continues to nurture fantastic friendships with more people each year. Kids at ACS develop an inquisitiveness for life and learning while developing and respecting early-on their role as community members and team players. We love this school.

You have to visit ACS and see the students, to appreciate it! From the youngest to the oldest, the children are happy, they feel safe and valued, they are really confident, and they enjoy learning. We like that the curriculum includes drama at every level (maybe that’s in part why the children are so poised), foreign language, and hands-on science. We also believe in the strong emphasis on citizenship and family, and love the closeness of the families at school. The other parents really made us feel at home in our first year and it hasn’t stopped since. Don’t expect to be wowed by the campus, though. It’s older, and the facilities are just adequate compared to some of the other area schools with brand new buildings, but the teachers are fabulous and our daughter is happier than she’s ever been – she looks forward to school every day! The academics are solid at ACS, and the program gets more demanding starting in about third grade, but there is not a lot of emphasis or pressure or competition for grades and test scores, which we like – what they’re doing works though. This year, I think every eighth grader who applied to Presentation, Bellarmine, and Notre Dame got in! But for sure, you need to go to the school, and see the happy children, to have a glimpse of what makes ACS special compared with the other schools in the area.

Our family has had 3 children in ACS. Our daughter graduated 2 years ago and was accepted into the honours program at a private respected high school. The ACS graduates are very well prepared for high school and are considered "top of the class" by many high schools. My child in elementary school thrives with experienced teachers, a hands on active curriculm and a safe understanding environment. The Middle School has acheived a balance of being demanding, to teach self reliance, responsibilty and high academics, while still being understanding of developing children.

Our daughter will be starting her 6th year at Almaden Country School in September. We are extremely pleased with every aspect of her development as a result of attending this wonderful school. ACS offers the perfect combination of developmentally-appropriate academics, comprehensive enrichment programs (art, science, P.E., drama, foreign language, music, etc.), individual attention, community spirit and parental involvement. Our daughter is ALWAYS happy to go to school - and we are always happy to become involved in the various volunteer opportunities that exist. It is a happy, warm, welcoming place to be. There is a quality that exists at this school that is hard to find elsewhere... an actual joy of learning! We are confident that ACS is preparing our child for a successful future in every way.

Our children have been taught by excellent teachers who provide a safe and caring environment where our children have learned to think critically and creatively and to love learning. I expected that ACS would teach my children the rigorous academics that are required to keep them competitive with other children from this area and I have not been disappointed. But I have been pleasantly surprised at the emphasis on teaching students how to plan their projects, take notes and organize their time. The material becomes more demanding as the students progress through the grades and the students are prepared to successfully take on projects of increased complexity and as a result, I believe they will be prepared to handle the very challenging loads that they will face in high school.

Almaden Country School (ACS) is the most exceptional place! Our daughter is a fountain of possibilities. After horrific experiences with the local public school system here in San Jose we searched for a school that would allow our daughter to reach her full potential and still experience the joys of childhood. ACS has provided that and more. ACS offers excellence in science, language, art, drama, and music.
The teachers are wonderful, dedicated people who genuinely love their work and the children. We find all of the administration, staff, and faculty to be of exceptional quality. They are exceedingly dedicated to the "Country School Way" and are focused on bringing out "the gift in every child".
If you want the best education and preparation for life for your child PLEASE check out ACS. They have several Open House events per year that will astound you with their dedicated teachers and parents!
Dr. Ole Jorgenson is new to ACS this year as Head of School. He brings an amazing amount of experience, talent, and success from his previous work.
If you want to know more, look at their website, call the school, and come to an Open House event.

I've lived in San Jose for more than a decade and had heard nothing but amazing things about Almaden Country School but now I understand why. My daughter is in kindergarten and we are constantly impressed by every aspect of the school. From the strong academics to the incredible enrichment programs, this school offers a warm, caring environment where kids get to be kids. The teachers are passionate, the parents involved and the kids thriving; what more could a parent want?

We picked Almaden because we believe children need to be in an environment that nurtures their creativity, instead of only teaching reading and math. Our world is changing so fast we can't possibly know what kinds of careers will be important in the future, so it's critical that children learn how to think (versus how to take a test). Almaden focuses on a love of learning that is geared specifically to each child's type of intelligence. We couldn't be happier.

My daughter recently graduated from ACS (8th grade), after attending from 3rd grade. When I first read about ACS, I was impressed with their approach toward education -- it isn't just academics, it's partnering with the parents to raise a person with integrity, responsibility, self-determination and respect for self and others. Over the years, I found that approach to be unwavering.
If I were to go back to my daughter's third-grade year and have the opportunity select a school for her based on what I know now, I would select ACS again without hesitation.
