Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The Delphi Network of schools began in 1976 as the dream of a small group of educators interested in building a new kind of learning environment. Founding Headmaster Dr. Alan Larson (Ph.D. Mathematics, Stanford University) and several of his colleagues founded the Delphian School on 800 beautiful acres outside Portland, Oregon. Their goal was to reverse the trend of decreasing standards in education.
The success of the Delphi Program led to the opening of Delphi Academy Los Angeles (K-12) in 1984 and Delphi Academy of San Francisco Bay (K-8) in 1986. Originally located in Palo Alto, Delphi Academy of San Francisco Bay moved to its current location at 890 Pomeroy Avenue in Santa Clara in 1996 where we eventually became known as Delphi Academy of Santa Clara.
What is your primary product or service?
We are an independent, coeducational, non-sectarian day school offering a kindergarten through eighth grade program. Academics focus on providing students with a solid grounding in the basics, a rich and challenging hands-on curriculum, and the ability to study purposefully and independently.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Weekly field trips, personalized student programs, and a great balance of academics and applied, practical activities ensure that every student gets a great education. Rather than just memorizing facts to pass tests, Delphi students master each level of material 100% before moving on, and learn how to apply and use the knowledge in real life.
This approach keeps our students continually evaluating new information in relation to the real world. Their education becomes something they build and own, not something piled onto them. In the end, we want to see our students maintain their individuality, while being self-motivated, confident, active and purposeful individuals who are capable of pursuing and reaching their chosen goals.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We currently have one location in the Bay Area and are planning to open a preschool in the Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area in the near future. The Delphi Network of Schools spans the U.S. with locations in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sheridan (OR), Clearwater (FL) and Santa Monica (CA).
